2020 marks a major milestone for Indonesia as it celebrates its 75th anniversary as a nation.  It also happens to be the Nikkei's 50th year operating in Indonesia.

During this period, our correspondents have seen the nation emerge to become one of the fastest growing economies in Asia with a large middle class and some of the region's most promising startups.

To celebrate this occasion, government officials and top executives will discuss some of the opportunities Indonesia can offer as it strives to be a fully developed country by 2045.

General TNI (Ret.) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Republic of Indonesia

General TNI (Ret.) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan is the current Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs in Indonesia.
He also served as Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic of Indonesia from 31 December 2014 to 2 September 2015.
On 12 August 2015 he was appointed by President Joko Widodo as Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security replacing Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno.

In the reshuffle of the Cabinet on July 27, 2016, he was appointed as Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs replacing Rizal Ramli.
In the Advanced Indonesian Cabinet in 2019, President Joko Widodo was appointed as the Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs.

Minister Lufut spent most of his military career in the Kopassus (Army Special Forces), first commander of the Kopassus 81st anti-terrorist detachment; 1974, led Indonesia’s Garuda contingent serving under United Nations in Port Suez, Egypt; 1999, ended military service as Commander of the Army’s Education and Training with the rank of Lieutenant General in 1999; 2000, received the rank of Honorary General.

Formerly, he was the Ambassador to Singapore; Minister for Industry and Trade; Presidential Chief of Staff; Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.

Minister Luhut was born in Simargala, Huta Namora, Silaen, Toba Samosir, North Sumatra, 28 September 1947.

John Riady

CEO, PT Lippo Karawaci and Executive Director of the Lippo Group

John Riady is CEO of PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk and President Commissioner of PT Siloam International Hospitals Tbk, respectively the largest real estate and hospitals company in Indonesia. He is also Executive Director of the Lippo Group and is an active investor in the Southeast Asia technology sector, including in OVO, Indonesia’s leading digital payments company, a company which John Co-Founded and today remains as President Commissioner/Chairman.

John is a licensed attorney in the State of New York and holds degrees in Political Philosophy and Economics from Georgetown University, an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University Law School.

John also serves on the Columbia University International Advisory Board, the Wharton Business School Asia Executive Board, and is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (YGL).”

Axton Salim

Executive Director, Salim Group

Mr. Axton Salim was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Colorado, US, in 2002.

Since 2009, he is a Director of PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk (Indofood), a leading Indonesian food company with operations spanning from the production of raw materials and their processing, to consumer products in the market. He is also a Director of Indofood’s Consumer Branded Products business group, PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk (ICBP), which manufactures and markets a diverse range of consumer products including noodles, dairy, snack foods, food seasonings, nutrition and special foods, and beverages. He also heads the Dairy Division as well as Corporate Marketing Division.

Previously, he started his career in Indofood Group as a Brand Manager of the Snack Division, PT Indofood Fritolay Makmur. He is also involved in Salim Group’s partnership with NUS Enterprise for Block71 Jakarta, a community centre for tech startups. The partnership taps the synergies from the experience of NUS Enterprise and the entrepreneurial track record and passion of the Salim Group.

Mr. Axton Salim also serves as Global Co-Chair of Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Advisory Group since 2014 - present. He served as Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) council member from May 2012 to May 2014.

Kanji (Kenny) Tojo

Mr. Kanji (Kenny) Tojo is President Director of PT. Sumitomo Indonesia since April 2018.
He joined Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) in April 1985 and has long been in charge of several construction equipment related companies as a management.

In April 2015, he assumed the role of General Manager of Construction & Mining System Division in Sumitomo Corporation supervising more than 30 companies in all over the world. He has stationed abroad in U.S.A, Canada, China, and Jakarta, Indonesia is his forth country.

In April 2018, he assumed the present position in Sumitomo Corporation Group also in April 2019 he started serving as Chairman of the Board at The Jakarta Japan Club (Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia) after one year’s Vice Chairman experience.

Noni Purnomo

President Director, PT Blue Bird Tbk

Noni Purnomo holds an Industrial Engineering degree and an MBA in Finance and Marketing. She is a Business Woman, Philanthropist, and mother of 3 daughters. She was listed in “Power Women in Asia” by Forbes.

She is the President Director of PT Blue Bird Tbk and founded Blue Bird Peduli which recently launched the 'Women Empowerment Project' to empower more than 40,000 wives of Blue Bird Group employees and drivers.

Noni has been actively supporting several start-up companies through her own investment company and through ANGIN Women Funds, which she was a co-founder. She is also actively involved in several mentorship programs and recently awarded as “Mentor of the Year” by Endeavor Indonesia. Noni serve a board member of the Australia Indonesia Institute, a Chairperson of Intelligent Transport System Indonesia Chapter, Indonesian Transport Society Board of Presidium, Board of Advisor of IPMI, Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia and an advisor to Antler Asia. A Young Presidents Organization Member since 2003. As per March 2019, Noni has been appointed as the member of member of University of Indonesia Board of Trustee member for period 2019-2024.

In December 2019 she received honorary doctorate degrees from The University of New Castle Australia.

Ken Koyanagi

Editor-at-Large, Nikkei Asian Review

Ken has been reporting on business and economy of India and other Asian regions since spring 2015 as an editor-at-large of the Nikkei Asian Review out of Bangkok and then Mumbai, his current base. Prior to the current role, he was the founding Publisher of the Nikkei Asian Review (NAR) since its launch in November 2013.

After joining Nikkei in 1988, Ken as a staff journalist reported in such fields as the Tokyo capital markets, financial sector, TMT (technology, media & telecom) sector. He covered the U.S. technology sector at Nikkei’s Silicon Valley news bureau in Palo Alto, California in 2001-2005.

He studied political science at the Penn State University Graduate School, the French language and the political science at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

Toru Takahashi

Editor-in-Chief of Editorial Headquarters for Asia, Nikkei Inc.

Toru Takahashi is Nikkei’s Editor-in-Chief of Editorial Headquarters for Asia and is based in Bangkok, Thailand since April, 2019. He is now responsible for all coverages of Asia. After graduating from the College of Business Administration, Yokohama National University, he joined Nikkei in 1992 as a staff writer. He was first posted in Thailand from 2010 to 2015 as the Bangkok Bureau Chief.
