Anthony Pipa
Senior Fellow, Global Economy and Development, Center for Sustainable Development, Brookings Institute
Tony Pipa is a senior fellow in the Center for Sustainable Development at the Brookings Institution. He launched and leads the initiative Local Leadership on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which works with mayors and local government officials to advance sustainable development globally by solving local problems through application of the SDGs. He is also leading research on the emergence of city diplomacy and the impact of global cooperation among local governments on transnational issues.
Tony also launched and manages the Reimagining Federal Rural Policy initative, which seeks to modernize and transform U.S. federal policy to enable community and economic development in underserved and economically distressed rural places across the U.S. His analysis and recommendations are informed by successful changes in policy and practice in U.S. investments overseas.
Tony came to Brookings after serving in the U.S. Department of State during the Obama administration as special envoy to the UN to negotiate and adopt the SDGs. He also served in multiple senior policy roles at USAID, ending the administration as chief strategy officer. He has three decades of executive leadership experience in the philanthropic and public sectors addressing poverty and advancing inclusive economic development both in the U.S. and globally. He attended Stanford University, was graduated from Duke University, and earned a Master of Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Astra Bonini
Senior Sustainable Development Officer,Division for Sustainable Development Goals, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations
Astra Bonini is a Senior Sustainable Development Officer with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) in the Division for Sustainable Development Goals where she works to identify interlinkages among the SDGs and apply science, technology and innovation to achieve these goals. A sociologist with research and policy expertise in areas including inequality, food systems, social mobility and education; Astra began her career as an engineer. Prior to joining UNDESA, Astra was a senior researcher with the Human Development Report Office of the United Nations Development Programme and a Postdoctoral Research Scholar with the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University. Astra earned her PhD in sociology from the Johns Hopkins University and has a Master of International Affairs Degree from Columbia University.
Norichika Kanie
Professor, Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University
He is also a representative of xSDG Laboratory, Keio Research Institute at SFC.
Before joining Keio, he worked at the Graduate School of Decision Science And Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Department of Policy Studies, the University of Kitakyushu.
He serves various committees and steering groups, including: a member of the SDGs Promotion Roundtable Meeting, established by the Japanese government under the SDGs Promotion Headquarters; a member of the Expert Study Group for the Promotion of SDGs by Local Governments for Japanese Cabinet Office. His research focuses on International Relations, Sustainability Science and Earth System Governance. He has participated in the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the common goals adopted by the United Nations, from the conception stage. He is a leading authority on the SDGs, and is striving to balance research and practice. His recent publication is 「SDGs(Sustainable Development Goals)」(Chukoshinsho, 2020) Norichika Kanie was appointed 15 independent scientists to draft the second quadrennial Global Sustainable Development. He received his Ph.D. in Media and Governance from the Keio University.
